Dylan grew up in a immediate family in which nobody drank. His mother and his father didn’t drink, although alcoholism had plagued the family generations prior. Despite her non-use of alcohol, Dylan’s mother was in recovery for substance abuse, but he is not sure she actually used drugs. His father was emotionally inaccessible. What Dylan came to learn is that his parents were so damaged by other relatives who were addicts that they didn’t know how to act any differently despite their non-substance abuse.
