Renee believes her son Adam was an addict from the first time he smoked pot in middle school; he almost immediately tried harder drugs culminating with Special K, an animal tranquilizer that leaves you in a catatonic trance like state. Today Renee shares of her struggle relative to Adam's battle in his many attempts to get clean before his untimely death.

Before he ruined his life, Richard had dreams of being a writer.  But it was not to be.  Hear Richard's story of how he went from being a successful member of society to a broken man addicted to crack cocaine.  Not even a deadly car crash that landed him in the hospital for 2 years was enough to make him stop until one fateful day when everything changed.

May 25, 2013: Joya

Joya had everything, but yet had nothing.  She lived to "serve" men who wouldn't, and couldn't, love her back.  Joya was so scared to be alone that she would do anything to keep a man, including becoming an alcoholic to squash her own feelings.  Joya eventually hit an emotional "rock bottom" and knew she had to change, or die.

May 4, 2013: Alcoholics Anonymous

Dee’s memories of drinking were happy ones.  She loved drinking Shirley Temple’s with her parents at the Officer’s Club, and drinking the foam off her dad’s beer.  She associated drinking with laughter and good times.  Until the first time when she got drunk and learned there was nothing was fun about it.  Dee was confused when she realized she couldn’t wait to get drunk again.  Hear Dee’s story of how she thought alcohol solved all of her problems until she finally learned that not only did alcohol not solve her problems it was the cause of all of them.

May 3, 2013: Alcoholics Anonymous

Larry’s dad was an alcoholic, and he always watched his dad drink vodka.  There was chaos in his house, and he wished his family was “normal” like his neighbors.  His dad eventually got sober, but that’s when Larry’s drinking began.  Larry was totally uncomfortable in his own skin, and couldn’t talk to a girl unless he was drunk.  He had so much fear.  One day he realized he was just like his father and needed help.  He heard the phrase, that “alcoholics were like teabags;  they always do better in hot water”, and that clicked for him.  He began the hard work of recovery.  Hear the fascinating story of what happened to Larry once he “turned his life around”.

April 29, 2013: Emotions Anonymous

Life was getting complicated for Alan.  He was depressed, and no longer wanted to live.  What was upsetting to Alan, though,  was not that he didn't want to live.  He was o.k. with that.  What bothered him more was that he was afraid to die.  Alan was on the brink of suicide when a miracle came into his life.  That miracle was Emotions Anonymous

Susan was a self-described "savvy New Yorker".  No one could pull the"wool over her eyes".  No one except her husband, Joel, who fooled her and hid his gambling issue from her for years.

In honor of MARCH MADNESS we are featuring stories from those who have recovered from their gambling issues and from their family members who were affected by their problem.  Our first speaker is Andy who always lied about his gambling until day the lies caught up with him in a big way.  
Our next speaker, Joan, is Andy's wife.  She grew up with a dad who gambled, and she thought when she married Andy that he was opposite of her father. It turned out she was very wrong.
March 2, 2013: Lifelong member of the "why not" club
Teddy has been sober for 25 years. He cannot recall his first Filet Mignon', or his first ice cream cone, but he will never forget his first beer at age 13. Teddy's drinking quickly coalesced into regular heroin use with a crew of 50 or 60 guys; 80% of whom died before they turned 30. Today Teddy shares his story of hope and courage of how he was able to free himself from the vicious cycle that brought down so many of his loved ones. 
March 2, 2013: Pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization
Lynda has dedicated her life to art and recovery as the creator of the documentary "Twelve". She is finally able to live out her big dreams that were thwarted by her alcoholic attitudes when she was younger. Lynda fled home and traversed the country in search of wholeness, but it wasn't until she bottomed out into the rooms of recovery that she learned she had to stop running and instead face and embrace everything about herself if she wanted to stay sober.
