Both of Christopher’s parents drank, and he has vivid early childhood memories of his parents drinking together up until the time they divorced, and his father left, when he was eight years old. He says their alcoholism created atmospheres in which they could not love him as a child, as they would frequently not attend his childhood gathering and functions. But none of these people, who were often willing to his friends or romantic interests, could fulfill his parental needs. While his relationship with parents has improved during his adulthood, they are both still active alcoholics.
