Bruce remembers his first drink as a teenager, and it made his depression and shyness disappear. He would chase the feeling into young adulthood, drinking and doing drugs. At age 21, he married his girlfriend, but has no recollection of the ceremony as he was in a blackout. Addiction prevented him from being an attentive and loving husband and father, despite multiple marriages and multiple children. While Bruce reached a level of sobriety in 12-step programs, his fellow Steelworkers took it upon themselves to try giving real addiction treatment.
