Bill grew up in eastern Ontario, moving around frequently because his father was in the military. As he and his brother so often relocated, they never allowed themselves to get too attached to friends. Both Bill and his brother would later become alcoholics, seeking recovery in 12-step groups. In his early twenties, taking a job as a steelworker, Bill found alcohol and along the way acquired a wife and kids. But all this time, Bill says life slowly got worse no matter what he did. His drinking caused him to hate the man he would see in the mirror each morning.
