Mario grew up in a French-Canadian family and thinks he had his first drink when he was eight years-old. It didn’t take long for he and his friends to sneak beer and liquor with his friends. His drinking lead to marijuana use in his early teens. He now thinks his alcohol and drug abuse helped his escape his abusive home. He sobered up early in life but found help in staying sober with help from his labor union’s programs. Mario would come to need the union’s outreach and assistance services when his wife of twenty-plus years would suffer her own mental health matters, including substance abuse and suicide attempts.
