Robert drank and drugged for 36 years before choosing sobriety. Coming from Los Angeles’ South Central neighborhood and a mixed Hispanic and Native American family in which alcohol was central to daily life. While he had tastes of alcohol as a young child, his first drink by choice came at the age of 8 when he learned his parents were divorcing. The alcohol soothed his fears. While drinking as a child he joined a gang, and eventually started taking hard drugs. Years a later, a health scare would freak him out enough to seek recovery and attending meetings. And one day, Tish walked into his meeting. She had been drinking since childhood, when her alcoholic father insisted on sharing his Gin and Tonic with her. Gin would be booze of choice, drinking daily as a teen. Robert and Tish are now engaged.
