Tom’s first drink was at age sixteen. For him, drinking and getting drunk was a rite of passage. He blames mostly his father, who to this day is still an active drinker. But at the time, Tom thought being an alcoholic was cool, and even a sign of maturity. In high school, Tom decided to attend a teenage keg party instead of his school’s homecoming dance. But before the party, he and some friends started drinking beer and he found that he was the only member of his circle of friends who could drink heavily. Tom finished their beers and never made it to the keg party.
