Ron grew up in what he termed a “normal” household. His was not a family of addicts. The family drank “normally” – that is, non-abusively. But Ron was introduced to alcohol at an early age, and from that moment he liked the way it made him feel. He would drink whenever he could. His drinking lead to drug use, as he smoked pot. He agreed to seek counseling when his mother issued an ultimatum; her own brother committed suicide while in the throes of addiction. By the time Ron was 16 years old, he was sober.
